8 Hair Coloring Techniques by Kimage Salon

Did you know that there are various hair coloring techniques that our hairstylists use at our hair salons in Singapore to achieve your desired hair color? While balayage and highlights are among the most popular, there are many other techniques as well!

In this article, we explore the different hair coloring techniques used at Kimage Salon. We cover the differences between balayage, highlights, ombré, sombre, ash grey, blonde, silver, bold colors, and lowlights.

It’s important to note that bleaching may or may not be required to achieve the techniques mentioned. If you have naturally dark hair or your hair was previously dyed a dark shade (e.g., dark brown or black) and you want a lighter color, our stylists may need to bleach your hair. Conversely, if your hair is naturally dark and you’re aiming for a dark to medium brown shade, bleaching might not be necessary.

1. Balayage

Balayage is one of the most requested hair coloring techniques at our hair salons in Singapore. With balayage, you achieve well-blended, natural-looking, and sun-kissed hair. While balayage includes highlights, the highlights from this technique blend seamlessly with your base color. In contrast, with traditional highlights, the streaks of hair are more uniform and noticeable.

2. Highlights

Highlights use foil and feature strands of vertical hair that are more apparent and usually one or two shades lighter than your natural or base color. This hair coloring technique adds depth and dimension to your hair. Additionally, regrowth lines are typically more noticeable with highlights compared to balayage. Highlights can be done with or without bleach.

When choosing shades for your highlights, we usually recommend colors based on your skin complexion. If you have cool undertones, gold and caramel tones will complement your complexion, while those with warm undertones, ashy and blonde tones will look more flattering.

3. Ombre

Ombre, on the other hand, features darker shades from the roots to the middle of your hair, with lighter tips towards the bottom. With ombre, you can select 2 to 3 hair colors to experiment with.

Although this hair coloring technique started in Europe, it has also become popular in our hair salons in Singapore. Some popular ombre hair colors include rose gold, caramel, auburn to copper, and black to silver. This technique is perfect if you’re going for a unique, bold, and more noticeable hairstyle.

4. Sombre

Sombre, on the other hand, is the subtle and milder version of ombre. While it also uses 2 to 3 hair color shades and features a dark-to-light color scheme, it is less pronounced than the ombre hair coloring technique. Popular sombre hair colors include mocha, blonde, and caramel sombre.

5. Ash Grey

Ash grey is a more popular term for "Granny Grey" or simply "Grey." To achieve this hair color, our hairstylists usually bleach our customers’ hair to reach a light blonde shade, then blend in shades of black and white. We also apply a hair treatment to help prevent damage from the bleaching process.

6. Blonde and Silvers

Since Asians naturally have dark hair colors, bleaching is typically required for achieving blonde or silver shades. With this technique, our hairstylists usually bleach our customers' hair 2 to 3 shades lighter than their original color to fully remove the red pigments.

7. Crazy Hair Colors

For customers who want to achieve striking hair colors, this technique is applied. Popular colors requested by our customers include purple, pink, red, orange, rainbow, and teal. Achieving these vibrant shades typically requires several rounds of bleaching.

Semi-permanent hair coloring products are usually used for these colors and can last around 2 to 4 weeks, depending on how you care for your hair after the appointment.

8. Lowlights

Lowlights is a hair coloring technique typically recommended by our hairstylists for those who want to add depth and volume, conceal obvious silver or gray hair, or tone down their existing blonde hair color. This technique uses dark and deep colors, such as caramel or chocolate brown.
